Marsh Harbour, Abaco |
Monday the 1st was cloudy and rainy.
Tuesday was a chore day This evening we joined a dozen
boaters at Harbour View for their weekly Tuesday Trivia, led by John from
Atlanta. It's the 11th year here for he and his wife Mel, aboard
their Ocean Alexander. Many of the cruisers moored at Harbor View are
frequent, long-staying visitors to the Bahamas. The Trivia evenings include
pot luck dinners . Paired with
Rich and Pam, the four of us lost the game but had loads of fun . Wednesday
dawned cloudy with rain but cleared by 10 am. Seems like a bad winter
everywhere. Carey and I , with Rich and Pam, opted to take a quick ferry
ride to
Hope Town, 7 miles away, to meander the streets, take a golf cart ride
throughout the cay, have lunch and the required cocktails. It was
Rich and Pam's first visit there, so we climbed the Hope Town light house, toured
two local resorts near the ocean and walked Tahiti
Beach. A laugh of the day was the sign along the way that clearly
showed us the way to travel on our rented golf cart ("This way or That
way"). We finished the day with ice cream at the Sugar Shack and
returned to Marsh Harbour by a return ferry. Carey has strained her
back somehow and is in a good deal of pain. If it doesn't
get better by tomorrow we're off to find a doctor. I know she is not
feeling well because she let me make dinner. I managed some hot soup.

Marsh Harbour, Bahamas |
This five day period was a quiet and relaxing period in Marsh
Harbour. 70 degrees and plenty of sun was accompanied by wind that
kept us at the pier but we enjoyed the tropical weather, watched the Saints
beat the Colts, and toured the town with friends. We especially
enjoyed a luncheon date with new friends and old acquaintances at Boat
Harbour, a resort in the area. Carey has really enjoyed talking to
Charlie and Marty, friends from our last visit here, who are from
Washington DC. They know several of Carey's friends at the
Smithsonian. On the walk back to the boat one day we stopped to read a Wall of
Heroes., which we had thought was for war veterans. Turns out, all the
inscriptionsll were of local people who made a difference in the
town. The one pictured below was dedicated to a local businessman who
ran a restaurant (bar) called the Cat House. A nice touch for a small
town, that may be appropriate for other small towns. |

Marsh Harbour, Bahamas |
Four more days of retirement and the Bahamas, we watched the snow fall in
Virginia on TV as we enjoyed 70 degree temperatures. Even with comfortable temperatures we had high winds
which keeping the boat at the pier. Today we rented a car and
toured the Grand Abaco Island with Rich and Pam, going first to Sandy Point,
the most southern point of the island and had lunch at Nancy's; the best
meal we've had to date. Nancy's is a small restaurant facing the
Atlantic, very rudimentary, but a simply beautiful spot.
No written menu. The lady serving us gave us a few choices
and we picked our choice and sat for a fabulous meal, not knowing until the
end what we would pay for the lunch; well worth he price. After
lunch we headed north to Pete's Pub at Little Harbour. You can see the
road we traveled. It was slow going. But the small cove and
sandy beach area there makes it worth the trip. We've moored there
previously and love the tranquility. The tiki bar and nearby art gallery are worth the visit also. After
sampling their signature rum drink, we headed north to Treasure Cay, a resort
slightly north of Marsh Harbour. Not our favorite place as it's just a
resort complex, but they do have
one of the longest and most beautiful beaches in the area. After
checking out their rum specials we headed back to Marsh Harbour to get ready
for the gale winds we are forecast to receive tonight. At least it
does not come with snow. |

Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas |
13th and 14th produced the forecast gale force winds; 52 knots were common
during the two day period. Sunday night Carey and I enjoyed a special
Valentine's Day dinner at Mangoes; a great buffet that set us up to relax
and watch a bit of the winter Olympics. Monday dawned with low winds
and plenty of sunshine so we headed out on the boat for Guana Cay. We
traveled with Rich and Pam and their visiting friends Blaine and Diane
aboard Adena and Wayne and Francine with their friend Rejean onboard their
boat My Way. They are from Quebec,Canada and the entire group have become
fast friends. A short 10 mile trip got us to Guana.. We tied up
at a local dock (no power or water, but a safe haven) then walked quickly to
Nippers, a notorious oceanfront restaurant and bar on the Atlantic side of
the Cay. Carey and the "crowd" enjoyed drinks and a nice lunch meal.
Many of the crowd hopped in the ocean and body surfed after lunch; I was not
in that group. Actually, only the women jumped in; the men didn't stray
from the bar area. Returning to the boats, we
stopped at the local vegetable stand. Tuesday morning we relaxed and watched as another cold front
moved thru the area; winds at 20 to 25 knots, clouds and rain. We
ventured out anyway to Grabbers, another shoreside restaurant. Wayne had to
stand by the heater as he felt a bit chilled in the 60 degree temperatures.
The other two boats left to return to Marsh Harbour after lunch. Carey
and I decided to stay and enjoy Guana for another day. |
