Marsh Harbour, Abaco, Bahamas |
Lazy morning as we decided what to do.
Winds were forecast to come up this afternoon so Carey and I decided to head
back to Marsh Harbour through the Sea of Abaco. It was a bit choppy
but a pleasant ride around the Cays and rock croppings. We arrived
back in Marsh Harbour before noon, after our 9 mile trip and relaxed on the
boat as the wind blew at 25 knots. This weekend the forecast is great
so we're headed out again. Until then we'll plan our trip to the
Exumas starting next week. |

Hope Town and Marsh Harbour, Abaco |
Thursday, the 18th we stayed in port and finally the weather improved.
The weekend was going to be great! We left early Friday on the boat
and headed for Hope Town. Carey captured the pink house at the
entrance to the harbour that guided us in. After securing ourselves to
a buoy we took the dinghy in to town and enjoyed sitting at a local pub on
the Atlantic Ocean of the Cay and drank our fill of rum drinks. Later,
after a great meal at a local restaurant we toured the walkways around the
harbour and then dinghied back to the boat. Carey caught a great view
of the harbour early the next morning ... she wanted to watch the sun rise.
Later on Saturday we traveled back to Marsh Harbour and visited with the
friends we've made there, including Pam who came aboard for a glass of wine.
The weather now is much more settled ... 75 degrees with plenty of sun after
the morning clouds ... and we're planning our escape to the Exumas late next
week. |

Marsh Harbour, Abaco |
Last night we watched the annual Junkanoo festival. Named for a 17th
Century Slave Owner John Canoe, it is now a yearly festival and parade in
the Bahamas. Huge head dresses and brightly colored costumes with lots
of noise and music. A great event. Today we relaxed enjoying a
local restaurant's Sunday brunch and visiting with the boaters on the pier.
Weather was beautiful. Maybe the cold fronts have slowed down a bit
and real spring is finally here. |

Treasure Cay and Marsh Harbour, Abaco |
Monday it rained and we simply relaxed. Tuesday morning the sun was
shinning so off we went to Treasure Cay. Wayne and Francine on My Way
(a 41' Cruiser shown below) with their friend Rajean, Richard and Pam with
their guest John on Adena, and Carey and I on Apolonia. We took all
three boats and made the 14 mile trip to the local resort at Treasure Cay.
A beautiful day and we opened up the boats and cruised at 15 knots all the
way. Upon arrival we had lunch with the "group," shown below except
for Rajean and I who were off getting our food. After lunch the ladies
went to the beach for some sun bathing and the guys headed for the 18 hole
golf course. We pitted the US team (Phil and Rich) against the
Canadian team (Wayne and Rajean). We all had to sing Oh Canada after
Wayne and Rajean beat us by 2 points. A great day. That evening
the resort held a cookout on the beach with baby back ribs, steak and
chicken with good 70s music. The entire group sang to the songs.
We closed the bar and finally got to sleep sometime late Tuesday (or early
Wednesday).
Wednesday morning threatened an approaching cold front so we left about 10
am and were safely tied up in our slips at Marsh Harbour by noon.
Tomorrow we'll plan our trip further south through the Eleutheras and on to
the Exumas. It appears now that Wayne and Francine will join us for
part of that trip. Rich and Pam, on Adena left Treasure Cay headed
toward Florida as they are about to get back on their Great Loop travels.
They started the loop in Illinois and stopped by the Bahamas to await better
weather to finish the loop. We have really enjoyed them as we've
traveled with them over the last month. |

Marsh Harbour, Abacos |
Four days of enjoying Marsh Harbour, most of the days blowing hard.
Tomorrow is a good moving day so we'll leave in the morning for Dunmore, Harbour
Island in the Eleutheras. This will be a 72 mile trip, 22 on the
Bahamian Bank and 50 in the Atlantic as we're moving to another island area
in the Bahamas. Hope the forecast is good and the seas are at their
3-5 foot predicted level. We'll be traveling with Wayne and Francine
on My Way, Canadians who we have met and enjoy traveling with. It is
nice to have another boat along with us as we travel across the Atlantic. |
