White Point Marina, VA |
Moved the boat to White Point Marina at Kinsale,
VA in late October to complete yearly maintenance. We're on the hard
(the railway) for bottom painting, retooling of propellers, repacking
of rudder and main engine shafts, and changing the starboard main engine raw
water pump. Should be ready to head south by Friday 13 Nov. We're
trying out some new paint on the running gear to eliminate fouling.
Will see how it works. It consists of a primer coat and 6 coats of
Awl grip paint on the running gear. |

White Point Marina, VA |
Boat floated today. All yearly maintenance items complete and the
mechanics gave Apolonia a clean bill of health. The remnants of Ida
and the Nor'Easter that has pounded the East Coast for the last three days
caused us to change plans. We can't make Georgetown, SC and return
home by rental car for the Thanksgiving holiday, so we'll wait until after
Thanksgiving to move the boat south. Still plan to stop at Georgetown and
return for Christmas, then return to boat after Christmas for the trip to
the Bahamas. |

Completed sea trial today, successfully. |
21 Nov 2009 |
White Point Marina, VA |
We're loading the boat and doing necessary cleaning after a
yard work period. Could leave tomorrow, but must wait for a friends
and family Thanksgiving celebration at our house. Underway planned for
Saturday, 28 November. Weather forecast is for 51 degrees
and sunshine, with less than 10 knots of wind. Hope that forecast
holds. |

Hospital Point Norfolk VA |
We stayed aboard the boat last night and got underway this morning at 8 am,
with ice on the docks and deck of the boat. It quickly warmed up and
we had a pleasant trip 80 nautical mile trip down the Chesapeake Bay to
Norfolk in 65 degree weather. We are now anchored at Hospital Point,
Norfolk, VA, just across from Waterside. Carey continually checked
the charts and drove us toward Norfolk. The Bay gave us 10 knots of
winds and 1-2 foot seas, very nice for late November. We're finally
underway for the first phase of our trip to the Bahamas. We will get
to Georgetown, SC, then return home by rental car for Christmas at the
house, returning the end December to continue the trip to the Bahamas. |

Ocean Marine, Portsmouth VA. |
Underway at 8 am for Coinjock; was interrupted when the belt holding plate
for the salt water pump, just replaced, came off the pump shaft. A set screw had not
been tightened sufficiently. We stopped at nearby Ocean Marine and the
problem was fixed in two hours. The winds had increased to 25 knots
during the repair so we decided to take a weather day. We're enjoying
being back on the water and due to the problem and weather we planned to
enjoy a great Mexican Dinner at an Old Town Portsmouth restaurant.
However, the storm promised for mid afternoon arrived just as we headed out
for dinner so Carey fixed dinner onboard. During the day we toured
the boats being prepared for the Virginia winter, looked in awe at the large
Navy ships and Carey drooled over the boat she wants should we win the lottery (see below).
It's named "Grits." |
